The Naturalist's Apprenticeship: A 12-Week Immersive Nature Study Program
A 12-Week Immersive Nature Study Program
Ages 10+
What does it mean to truly know the natural world?
In The Naturalist's Apprenticeship, students won't simply learn about nature- they'll learn to observe it, question it, document it, and understand it like generations of naturalists before them.
Over twelve weeks, apprentices will develop skills used by field biologists, ecologists, natural history illustrators, and explorers while building confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong connection to the outdoors.
Each week combines field study, scientific investigation, creative documentation, and hands-on projects as students gradually build their own collection of naturalist tools, records, and discoveries.
Throughout the semester, apprentices may learn to:
- Keep a professional-style field journal
- Make careful scientific observations
- Use field guides and identification keys
- Identify local birds, trees, insects, fungi, and wildflowers
- Create detailed nature illustrations
- Prepare herbarium specimens
- Use microscopes to investigate the hidden world
- Ethically collect and catalog natural treasures
- Read tracks, signs, and seasonal changes
- Contribute observations to community science projects
- Curate a personal Cabinet of Curiosities
- Share discoveries through discussion and presentation
Rather than rushing through dozens of topics, we'll practice the habits that make a great naturalist: slowing down, asking thoughtful questions, noticing patterns, recording observations, and following curiosity wherever it leads.
By the end of the apprenticeship, each student will have created a rich collection of field journal entries, scientific illustrations, preserved specimens, identification records, and personal discoveries that reflect their own journey through the natural world.
Our semester concludes with a Naturalists' Exhibition, where apprentices will showcase their journals, collections, and favorite discoveries for family and friends while celebrating everything they've learned.
Whether your child already spends every spare moment outdoors or is just beginning to notice the wonders waiting beyond the front door, this apprenticeship offers an opportunity to develop the skills, confidence, and curiosity of a lifelong naturalist.
Tuition: $400 for the full 12-week apprenticeship.
