WHAT IS BACKYARD NATURE RANGER?
Backyard Nature Ranger is a nature-based program designed to help children explore, learn about, and protect the natural world. Families, homeschool groups, libraries, and community organizations can establish official chapters and complete hands-on Field Missions and Ranger Skills together while earning merit patches along the way.
WHO CAN START A CHAPTER?
Anyone with a passion for helping children connect with nature! Our chapters are started by homeschooling families, homeschool co-ops, grandparents, libraries, nature centers, scouts, educators, and community groups.
DO I NEED A CERTAIN NUMBER OF CHILDREN?
Not at all! Some chapters are a single family, while others include several families or larger community groups. Your chapter can grow and change over time.
WHAT AGES IS BACKYARD NATURE RANGER DESIGNED FOR?
Most Field Missions are best suited for ages 5–14, but many families enjoy adapting the activities for younger siblings or older students. Mixed-age groups are encouraged.

HOW DO FIELD MISSIONS WORK?
After your chapter is established, you'll be able to purchase individual Field Missions on topics such as owls, pollinators, turtles, fungi, wetlands, and more. Each mission follows our Explore • Learn • Protect philosophy and gives Rangers the opportunity to earn a matching merit patch.
WHAT ARE RANGER SKILLS?
Ranger Skills focus on practical field abilities rather than specific nature topics. Skills may include scientific sketching, nature journaling, wildlife tracking, map reading, using binoculars, and other tools that help children become confident naturalists.
CAN WE CHOOSE OUR OWN CHAPTER NAME?
Absolutely! Every chapter selects its own unique name during registration. We encourage choosing a name inspired by your local landscape, wildlife, or favorite outdoor place.
CAN OTHER FAMILIES JOIN OUR CHAPTER?
That's entirely up to you. During registration, you'll choose whether your chapter will be listed publicly in our Chapter Directory or kept completely private.
IS THERE AN ANNUAL RENEWAL?
Yes. Official Backyard Nature Ranger Chapters renew each year to remain active in our Chapter Directory and continue receiving chapter resources and benefits.
Annual Chapter Renewal: $39
DO I HAVE TO RENEW EVERY YEAR?
No. Your Starter Kit and all purchased Field Missions remain yours forever. Renewal is only required if you'd like to continue as an active Official Backyard Nature Ranger Chapter with access to ongoing chapter benefits.
WILL MORE MISSIONS BE ADDED?
Yes! New Field Missions, Ranger Skills, and merit patches will continue to be released, giving your chapter new adventures to enjoy throughout the year.
