13-week session

Step into the world of plants and fungi and discover the hidden systems that shape the landscapes around us.

In this 13-week class, students will explore botany and mycology through observation, hands-on investigation, and thoughtful discussion. We’ll look closely at how plants grow and function (from seeds and roots to leaves, flowers, and trees) while building a strong understanding of plant structure, life cycles, and classification.

Alongside our study of plants, we’ll dive into the fascinating world of fungi. Students will learn how fungi differ from plants, explore their life cycles, and uncover the essential roles they play in ecosystems- from decomposition to underground networks.

Throughout the session, students will:

  • Examine plant parts and their functions
  • Explore seeds, growth, and plant life cycles
  • Investigate leaves, photosynthesis, and plant cells
  • Learn how plants are classified and how to identify them
  • Study trees and their role in the environment
  • Discover unique plants, including carnivorous and poisonous species
  • Explore fungi, including mushrooms, spores, and mycelium networks

This class is part of our Stage Two: Field Naturalist program and is designed for students who are ready to build on their foundational knowledge and dive deeper into the natural world.

Prerequisite: Students must have completed at least three of the following foundational courses: Young Herpetology, Young Mammalogy, Young Ornithology, or Young Entomology.
