What does it mean to truly notice the world around you, and then share what you’ve discovered?

In this 8-week class, students will step into the role of environmental journalists, learning how to observe, ask thoughtful questions, and turn their discoveries into meaningful writing. Blending science and storytelling, this class invites students to slow down, pay attention, and communicate what matters.

Throughout the session, students will explore the foundations of journalism through a nature-focused lens. We’ll practice close observation, conduct interviews, learn how to write strong openings, and develop pieces that inform, engage, and spark curiosity.

Each class will include a mix of:

• Reading and discussing short mentor texts
• Learning a focused writing skill
• Hands-on practice through observation and interviews
• Supportive writer’s workshop time

Students will work toward creating their own original piece of environmental writing, which may include field notes, interviews, or feature-style articles. Final pieces will be compiled into a small class publication to share with families.

This class is designed to build confidence, strengthen writing skills, and help students find their voice as thoughtful observers and communicators of the natural world.
